Not only is a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) trained in psychotherapy and family systems. MFTs are licensed and are able to treat mental and emotional disorders whether it is within a marriage, couple, family, or other system.
The approach taken from a Marriage and Family Therapist is unlike psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers. Systemic therapists understand the complexity of relationships and are therefore mindful of all of those involved, not just the client within the therapy room.
Marriage and Family Therapists use a holistic perspective to health care. They are concerned with the overall, long-term well being of individuals, couples and families.
